Boxcryptor is an easy-to-use encryption software “Made in Germany”. It allows the secure use of cloud storage services without interrupting the user’s usual workflow. Boxcryptor supports more than 30 cloud providers – such as Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, or iCloud Drive. Furthermore, companies can encrypt files on Microsoft Teams, a file server, NAS, external portable devices, as well as local data.
Boxcryptor encrypts files client-side on a zero-knowledge basis before they are synchronized to the cloud. Private users and companies can enjoy peace of mind, knowing that they are the only one that can access their data that is worth protecting.
What problem are you trying to solve?
Boxcryptor allows you to use the cloud without giving up privacy and security. With Boxcryptor, data is encrypted so that no one else can access data except the owner of the key. This makes it impossible for internal or external attackers to steal information. You can rest assured that your data is protected.
How are you solving that problem?
Boxcryptor implements a combined encryption of RSA and AES-256. And – what’s very important for our users – Boxcryptor is easy to use.
Cracking a 128-bit AES key with a state-of-the-art supercomputer would take longer than the presumed age of the universe. And Boxcryptor even uses 256-bit keys. As of today, no practicable attack against AES exists. Therefore, AES remains the preferred encryption standard for governments, banks, and high security systems around the world. Combined with RSA encryption, Boxcryptor makes sensitive data of its users secure.
How has the pandemic impacted your company?
From an organizational view, the pandemic did not have much of an impact on our company at first – we were able to switch to remote work without any problems, as our data was secure even while we were working from home because of our encryption software. We didn’t have to worry about data protection and could continue working at home immediately.
However, we were inspired to develop a secure encryption solution for Microsoft Teams, which grew in popularity as a result of the pandemic. Within just four weeks, our development team provided a new application to encrypt files in Microsoft Teams which is now successfully positioned in the market.
Where do you see your company going in 5 years?
As in the last 10 years, we would like to continue to enable people to benefit from new technology while they can keep control of their personal data. Also, within the next 5 years, we want to continue to add security to cloud products and fulfill the expectations of our users all over the world.
What is the next big challenge in information security?
Undetected data protection incidents.
Every year, more and more companies become the target of an attack. Countless sensitive, personal, or confidential data are stolen. But the worst thing is that companies usually notice the incident only very late, or it even remains completely undetected.
If the data is encrypted and the key does not fall into the hands of the attackers, the attacker won’t be able to do anything with his or her “stolen goods”. All he or she gets is a bunch of scrambled numbers and symbols.
